Principal Investigator: Mohd Adnan Khan

Dr. Khan is an assistant professor in the Chemical and Materials Engineering Department at the University of Alberta. His research is focused on the design & analysis of sustainable energy systems and net-zero transition pathways for Canada. He also works with the Transition Accelerator and Edmonton Hydrogen Hub as a research fellow, conducting systems-level analysis of a new hydrogen value chain in Alberta. Dr. Khan has a Ph.D. in Material Science and Engineering and has spent the last 10 years working across the value chain of hydrogen and clean technology development, spanning material synthesis and characterization, reactor design, pilot demonstrations, and systems-level analysis.

Taha Kubbar

PhD Student

Taha holds a BSc and MSc in chemical engineering from Texas A&M University. He is passionate about sustainability and wants to pursue a career that leaves a positive impact on the world. His previous work include photocatalysis and corrosion, and now he will be pursuing his PhD working on electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction.

Harveen Kaur Tatla

MSc Student

Harveen received her Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology, India in 2020. She has professional experience of almost 2 years as a process engineer in IOL Chemical & Pharmaceutical Ltd., India. Harveen is working on the life-cycle assessment of anaerobic digestion and hydrothermal treatment of municipal sewage sludge. She is co-supervised by Dr. Rajender Gupta and Dr. Bipro Ranjan Dhar.

Mohammed Arshad

MSc Student

Arshad received his B.Tech in Chemical and Electrochemical Engineering from CSIR-Central Electrochemical Research Institute, India in 2022. During his Bachelor’s, he worked on electrochemical energy storage devices, specializing in supercapacitors. Arshad is interested in enhancing his knowledge of electrochemical technologies and advancements.

Bapti Biswas

MSc Student

Bapti holds a BSc in Energy Science and Engineering from KUET, Bangladesh, followed by a year of experience at Wartsila Bangladesh Ltd. He is currently pursuing an MSc in Chemical Engineering at University of Alberta, where his research focuses on Integrated Carbon Capture and Utilization (ICCU) processes producing value-added products.

Sohrab Hejazi

MSc Student

Sohrab received his BSc in chemical engineering from the Sharif University of
Technology, Iran in 2022. He has experience working on environmental analysis and air
pollution modeling. He is currently working on hydrogen production by methane pyrolysis. His main focus is the life-cycle analysis and techno-economic models for small scale hydrogen production by methane pyrolysis.

Pooya Talebi

Energy Systems Analyst

Pooya earned his BSc in Chemical Engineering from the Sharif University of Technology, Iran, and his MSc in Chemistry from the University of Calgary. His research was focused on data-driven catalyst design and discovery for CO. Currently, his work is dedicated to transitioning Canada's heavy-duty trucking sector to zero-emission vehicles.

Harpreet Singh

Energy Systems Analyst

Harpreet holds a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from SLIET, India, and has four years of research experience with DRDO, focusing on noble catalysts for Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology. He is currently pursuing a Master's in Chemical Engineering at the University of Alberta, with a keen interest in hydrogen and renewable energy.

Alireza Lotfollahzade

Energy System Analyst

Alireza received his BSc and MSc in Chemical Engineering from the Sharif University of Technology, Iran, and his second MSc from Concordia University. Currently, he focuses on designing a molten reactor for the methane pyrolysis process and conducting a techno-economic analysis for small-scale low-emission H2 production.

E S S Tejaswini

Postdoctoral Fellow

Tejaswini attained her PhD from NIT Warangal, India, in 2021. Her prior research has centered on the development of advanced control strategies for enhancing the operability of biological wastewater treatment plants. Presently, she is engaged in the fusion of machine learning and process control techniques, channeling her expertise towards the development of optimized models for hydrogen production units.

Hadi Shaker Shiran

Energy System Analyst

Hadi Shaker Shiran joined us as a research assistant in the Energy Transition Lab at the University of Alberta. His expertise lies in techno-economic assessment, catalyst development, electrochemical systems, and in-situ/operando Raman spectroscopy. Hadi completed his master’s degree in Chemical Engineering in the Kibria lab at the University of Calgary, focusing on techno-economic analysis and system design of integrated CO2 capture and electrochemical conversion systems. 

Anusha Pirya

Research Assistant

Anusha Priya completed her Master’s in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta in 2022. Her capstone research focused on the implementation of process safety concepts in hydrogen handling. She has 6 years of industrial experience in process operations and management roles at JSW Steel Ltd. in India. With us, she worked on a regulatory and market study of hydrogen storage for applications in residential units. Anusha was co-supervised by Dr. Lianne Lefsrud.

Muhammad Faisal Shehzad

Energy System Analyst

Muhammad Faisal Shehzad received his master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at Comsats University, Pakistan. His research interests include dynamic model development of renewable energy-driven systems, carbon capture utilization and storage, energy buffering integration, energy markets, hydrogen as fuel, and optimal control strategies development to introduce energy storage technologies in the smart grid.

Sara Tijani

COOP Intern

Sara was a second-year Chemical Engineering student at the University of Alberta when she joined us. She is interested in the field of energy transition and renewable energy systems with respect to hydrogen applications. Sara cunducted a feasibility study on decarbonizing Hamilton’s steel industry using hydrogen.
